Microsoft Small Basic

If you have children and want them to learn programming at an early age (recommended age is between 10 and 16), you should check out Microsoft Small Basic, which combines a simple language and a rich set of libraries together with a friendly development environment.

The Small Basic language draws its inspiration for an early version of BASIC but it is actually based on the .NET Framework. Like the early variants of BASIC it is based on, Small Basic is imperative and doesn't use or expose beginners to concepts like scopes, types, object orientation, etc.

Even though it is based on the .NET Framework, it really is small and consists of just 14 keywords. In fact, there really isn’t a type system. You can create string and numeric constants and assign them to variables. Operations performed on these variables will be interpreted according to the content. All variables are global and are always initialized, so they can be used before they're assigned.

You can even make use of events by creating a sub-routine and assigning it to an event. This will wire the it up to an the event.

Small Basic also contains libraries which provide static "Objects" that group operations, properties and events. New libraries can be created using other .Net Languages and added to the Small Basic runtime.

Since Small Basic is, well, small, it shouldn’t be considered the language of choice for solving every conceivable problem. It focuses on a beginner persona, and as such doesn’t contain features that don’t cater to that persona. The compiler and the environment do allow 3rd party Small Basic libraries to be plugged in, extending the possibilities of what you can do from within Small Basic. When you are ready to “graduate” to a more complete programming language and environment, you can easily export your Small Basic program to Visual Basic.

Although there are other beginner focused programming languages, like Scratch and Alice they are different than Small Basic. Both Scratch and Alice are great tools that help beginners learn the concepts of programming by enabling people to write "codeless" programs. Small Basic takes a different approach by introducing code as a first class concept.

Possibly the best part of Small Basic (at least in my opinion) is the support for Turtle Graphics, which is something I first learned as a child. I’m definitely looking forward to what becomes of Small Basic and using it teach my son programming when he gets older.

Google Chrome information series : Part 2

Hi All,

Today i will talk something about Sync functionality of the Chrome. This is very helpful to all those who are surfing regularly using multiple computers.

Google Chrome allow you to sync your environment information present in multiple computers. So browser data like bookmarks and extensions are in sync between home and office computer automatically. 

To Start sync functionality you just need to enable in the settings of Chrome.

Go to Options--> Personal stuff --> Start Sync

Then login with your Google id and Chrome will automatically pick up all the relevant information from that browser. now when you come to some different machine just go to same place and login with same id and Chrome will setup the data in the new machine.

I find Google Chrome very amazing to use so I am starting and interactive information series about the browser I love the most and use all the time since couple of months.

All my IT friends would already know many of the information but these series of post is for all those who have just started using internet and I have many of them in my contacts. This post is all of them and those who are in love with other browser like Internet Explorer.

Google chrome is complete browser with very less or know menu on it still have all the functionality at the top right corner. You have very good bookmark management given in Google Chrome. So if you will start using Chrome then you will get benefit of all these nice features.

It also have very nice searching facility on history and it automatically start downloading at one predefined folder and save you for selecting activity every time you download something.

A hello world post...

Hi All,

Happy holi to all the readers of this post.....

I was thinking since long that i should start writing a blog but due to my laziness that day never come in past. But as right now i am enjoying Sunday and as children are celebrating with color outside so i am sitting in the home and suddenly i realized that this is good day to start blogging and even good day to remember if my blogging activity will last for couple of years!!!

I haven't decided about the topics which i want to cover in blog and as this is my first post and  as a programmer by profession this could be hello world post which says that i am learning this activity and and this is my first post.

Till the time i have started writing i don't have any topics or thoughts in my mind which i can publish on blog but when i started writing now at the first line i have realized that this is something different because you are speaking in front of the world!!!

So suddenly i became vary careful about choosing words and about what to write. Anyways as i find this activity very interesting i am planning that i will write at least one blog per week. so if anyone in the world is reading this blog and if he or she find this interesting than it is good news for him or her and very good news for me!!!

As i have written so many lines i realized in back of my mind that there are some pros of writing a blog and there are some  cons too.

Blogging will clear your thoughts and improve your writing ability..
It gives you a chance to speak to the world....
If you have good writing skills then it may come out and you have second career option....
If someone will read and appraise your blog post then it is very good feeling...let's see will i get such ever or not.....

but there are some cons too
People will know more about you....
People will know your English and writing skills...
People can realize that how boring you are ....

But anyways i can say that everyone should give blogging a chance and i am sure he or she most probably find it very interesting.....
